General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.

Many of Ontario's salvage auctions sell only to registered dealers, and private buyers go through a dealer or a broker. You can also skip the auctions and buy privately.

These are the province's and the auctions' rules as of October 2026, and either can change them. Check the sources before you act.

Ontario's auctions and brokers

Ontario lets an auction skip dealer registration only if it sells to registered dealers, so many salvage auctions sell only to dealers. Each one sets its own rules, so read its terms, and each vehicle's page, before you register.

In Ontario, a business that buys a vehicle in its own name and resells it to you must be registered with OMVIC as a dealer, so check its registration before you deal. Expect its fee on top of the auction's buyer fees, then HST, transport and storage if you collect late, and ask for the total in writing before you bid.

Buying on DNF

On DNF, owners who kept a vehicle after a write-off, body shops and small rebuilders list their own vehicles. A free account lets you make an offer, with no dealer registration. Offers can be above or below the asking price, with no auction clock, and the seller accepts or declines. The Ontario brand is shown up front, whether it's None, Salvage, Rebuilt or Irreparable, along with the damage, whether it starts, runs and drives, photos and a Score.

After an offer is accepted and any required platform fees on both sides are paid, both sets of contact details are released, and from there you and the seller arrange payment, the paperwork and pickup. DNF never handles the vehicle payment. The brand is the seller's to report and isn't checked against the ministry's records. In a private sale, ask for the Used Vehicle Information Package before you pay, since it shows the brand and any liens.

OMVIC, curbsiders and the checks to make

You don't need to register to buy a vehicle for yourself. Ontario's exemption for personal vehicles doesn't cover one bought to fix and resell, even once, so anyone buying to resell has to be registered with OMVIC, the province's dealer regulator.

Sellers who do it without registering and pass themselves off as private sellers are called curbsiders. Ask OMVIC before you start.

The Ontario salvage rules guide explains each brand. Get the Used Vehicle Information Package and check the brand and liens, and plan for the structural and safety inspections with the Ontario rebuilt inspection guide.

Questions and answers

Can a private buyer bid at Ontario's salvage auctions?

Often not directly. Ontario lets an auction skip dealer registration only if it sells to registered dealers, so many do. Each auction sets its own rules, so check its terms before you register.

Do I need OMVIC registration to buy on DNF?

No, a free account is enough to make an offer. OMVIC registration matters if you buy and sell vehicles as a business, and that's a question for OMVIC.

When do I need to be registered with OMVIC?

When you're in the business of selling vehicles in Ontario, which can include buying vehicles to fix and sell for profit. Unregistered sellers posing as private sellers are known as curbsiders, so ask OMVIC before you start.
