Frame, unibody and bolt-on damage: read an assessor's report
Translate structural terminology into report questions, then check vehicle identity, measurement references, access limits and the evidence behind a repair proposal.
General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.
Read an assessor's report by separating three things: the vehicle's construction, the condition found and the basis of the proposed work. “Frame,” “unibody” and “bolt-on” identify different concepts. None is a complete finding about damage or repairability.
Ask for exact component names when a report uses shorthand such as “frame damage” or “bolt-on only.” Your purchase decision depends on what was assessed and what remains unknown, not on choosing the most reassuring label.
Translate the terminology into a precise question
This comparison is a reading aid. The assessor should identify how each term applies to the actual vehicle.
| Report term | What it usually describes | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Separate frame or body-on-frame construction | An architecture with a body mounted to a separate supporting frame | Which frame members, body mounts and body areas are within the finding? |
| Unibody or unitized structure | Construction in which the body structure performs supporting structural functions | Which named panel, reinforcement, member or attachment area is being discussed? |
| Bolt-on component | A component's attachment method | What supports the finding about the component and its mounting area? |
| Structural measurement | A dimensional assessment against identified reference information | Which points were covered, at what repair stage and with what limitations? |
| Repair proposal | Work the provider proposes on the basis of findings and applicable information | Which findings and OEM references support each unresolved decision? |
A subframe, a bumper reinforcement and a cosmetic panel should not acquire the same meaning simply because a seller calls each a “frame.” Ask the professional to resolve the wording against the manufacturer's component information.

Vehicles for sale (1)Read dimensions as evidence with a scope
Tesla's 2021+ Model S dimensional page describes measurements between known points as an aid to damage analysis and labels its supplied dimensions as reference information. For a buyer, the useful request is the applicable reference and the assessor's explanation of the result.
Do not copy a tolerance from an unrelated model into your notes. A report with unexplained colors or figures needs an interpretation from its author. Ask what the report supports about the assessed area and whether access, setup or omitted locations limit that conclusion.
Tesla also distinguishes electronic measuring for damage analysis from component fixturing during structural repair. Consequently, a measurement record and a repair-method record answer different questions. Ask for each relevant record rather than treating equipment ownership as proof of completed work.
Keep material identification separate from shape
A dimension describes geometry. Ask separately what manufacturer information supports the proposed treatment of the component.
For example, Tesla's 2021+ Model S materials page identifies different aluminum and steel components and directs decisions to material and component guidance. It does not provide a universal “straight means repairable” conclusion. Have a qualified provider explain the actual vehicle's requirements and findings.
Blank measurement-report reading strip
Use this original strip beside the actual report. It is not an example result, a substitute report or a pass/fail scoring system.
Document match: vehicle identifier [blank]; report date [blank]; provider [blank]; report version [blank]; before or after which work [blank].
Reference match: OEM document or data source [blank]; model/build applicability [blank]; named points or areas [blank]; source revision or access date [blank].
Finding: assessor's wording [blank]; supporting report page or image [blank]; what that finding establishes [blank].
Limit: points or areas not assessed [blank]; reason [blank]; effect on the purchase question [blank].
Repair connection: proposed operation [blank]; relevant component/material reference [blank]; decision still awaiting evidence [blank].
Completion connection: work documented as completed [blank]; supporting record [blank]; remaining assessment [blank].
Keep the assessor's original wording alongside your summary. If the report names a component differently from the estimate, request a reconciliation rather than assuming the labels are interchangeable.
Decide whether the report answers your question
A useful report can still leave a purchase-critical area unresolved. Ask what further professional assessment would address it and what owner authorization or access is needed. You can leave the purchase decision pending when the available scope cannot answer that question.
Use what a collision estimate can leave out for quote boundaries and what the DNF Score means for listing-input limits. Carry the reading strip into your review of vehicle listings to distinguish a structural label from the evidence you need.
Questions and answers
Does bolt-on mean the surrounding structure is undamaged?
No. Bolt-on describes how a component attaches. Ask which surrounding areas the assessor evaluated and what supports the finding.
What makes a measurement report useful to a buyer?
It identifies the vehicle, measurement scope, reference information, findings and limits, with a professional explanation tied to the purchase question.
Does a measurement record prove the planned structural work is complete?
No. Damage analysis, proposed repair operations and records of completed work answer different questions.
