Questions and answers
Do I need an account to look at listings?
No. Anyone can browse listings and read every disclosure on them. You need a free account to make an offer, message a seller, save a search or list a vehicle. You must be 18 or older, and you confirm your email address before you can sign in.
Is DNF free?
Listing a vehicle and making offers are free. When fees apply, the seller pays a success fee and the buyer pays an introduction fee after acceptance. We show your full fee, including any tax, and the refund terms before you commit. Contact details are released only after both sides' fees are paid. See the fee and refund terms.
Do I need to be a licensed dealer to buy?
Not to buy a vehicle for yourself. Anyone with a free account can make an offer. If you plan to fix and resell vehicles, or part them out as a business, your province or state may require you to be licensed as a dealer or recycler, so check first. A few US states limit who can buy certain salvage or non-repairable vehicles, and those listings say so.
What do I need to list a vehicle?
The VIN, the brand and the province or state that issued the registration or title, the damage, whether it starts, runs and drives, where the vehicle is, and at least 4 photos, including a close-up of the damage. Eight photos are recommended to show the vehicle from every side. You also confirm that you own the vehicle or have the authority to sell it.
Why is my listing waiting for review?
A moderator looks at some listings before they go live: a seller's first listing, a listing with a non-repairable brand (or, in Canada, flood or fire damage), a brand word we can't match to the province's or state's words, and a vehicle or seller a moderator has acted on before. The moderator approves it or sends it back with the reason, and you can fix it and send it again.
How long does a listing stay up?
60 days. We email you when it expires, and you can relist it from your account with the same details and photos. You can also put it on hold or mark it sold from your account.
What is the DNF Score?
A number out of 100 on every listing, worked out from the seller's answers on the brand, the repair numbers, the mechanical condition, the damage and the paperwork, with the reasons shown. We don't inspect vehicles, so treat it as a starting point. Only a Rebuilt brand with its inspection certificate attached can score 80 or more. A non-repairable brand, or any flood or fire damage or brand, holds it at 24 or less.
How do offers work?
Offer above or below the asking price, in the listing's currency. There's no auction clock. Your offer stays open for 7 days unless you change or withdraw it, or the seller answers first. A new amount replaces your last one. The seller accepts one offer or declines them, and doesn't have to take any.
Why are phone numbers and email addresses hidden in messages?
Contact details are shared after a seller accepts an offer and any required platform fees on both sides are paid. Until contact details are released, phone numbers and email addresses in messages are hidden, and offer notes can't include them. Messages sent after contact details are released aren't masked.
What happens when a seller accepts an offer?
The listing shows as sale pending and the seller's other open offers are declined. When fees apply, both sides pay their platform fees before contact details are released by email and on your offers page. You then arrange the viewing, the paperwork and the pickup between yourselves, and pay the vehicle price directly to the seller. DNF collects its platform fees separately through Stripe; it never handles the vehicle payment.
What if the deal falls through?
The seller chooses "The deal fell through" on the accepted offer. The listing goes back on sale for another 60 days, and your conversation and the contact details you exchanged stay where they are. Offers declined when the seller accepted don't come back, so a buyer who still wants the vehicle makes a new offer. If fees were paid, the fee and refund terms explain which are refunded.
How does DNF treat flood and fire vehicles?
In Canada, DNF lists every vehicle with flood or fire damage for parts only, whatever its brand. That's our rule, not the province's. In the US, a vehicle with flood or fire damage or a flood or fire brand keeps its state's brand and shows a high-risk notice, because water and fire damage can hide in wiring and safety systems. Its Score stays in the Parts only band in both countries.
Why can't I make an offer on some US listings?
Illinois, Michigan and Virginia limit who can buy some branded vehicles. On a vehicle with an Illinois Salvage Certificate, a Michigan Salvage or Scrap title or a Virginia Nonrepairable title, only buyers the state allows, such as licensed recyclers, can make an offer. If that's you, add your license number to your business profile first. DNF doesn't check license numbers with the body that issued them.
Can I buy a vehicle in the other country?
Yes, you can make an offer on any listing. Your offer is in the listing's currency, and you settle the price with the seller in that currency. Bringing a vehicle across the border adds steps, and DNF doesn't arrange transport, export or customs. Read buying across the border before you make an offer.
Who sees my postal or ZIP code?
Nobody sees all of it. For a listing, we keep only the first three characters, and buyers see the area, never your address. On your buyer profile it's used for distances, and other members see your province or state and its first three characters at most.
How do I stop alert emails?
Every alert email has two links: one stops alerts for that saved search, the other stops all alert emails. You can also turn alerts off for one search in your saved searches, or for your whole account in your profile.
How do I delete my account?
From your account. Your listings come down and your open offers close at once. Your personal information is deleted 30 days later, and you can cancel until then. The privacy policy lists the few records we keep after that.
How do I report a listing or a message?
Use "Report this listing" on the vehicle's page. You don't need to be signed in. In a conversation, you can report one message or the whole conversation, and block the other member. Reports go to our moderators, who can hide or remove a listing or suspend an account.
