How to choose a collision shop before buying a damaged car

Interview a collision shop before buying a project, with a worksheet for vehicle-specific capability, outside providers, assessment limits and written commitments.

General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.

Choose a collision shop before buying a damaged car by asking whether it can assess and take on that particular project, how it obtains repair information, and which work it would send elsewhere. Get the assessment scope in writing before arranging vehicle movement or authorizing work.

An attractive workshop or a short repair quote does not answer those questions. Your first conversation should establish who will investigate the unknowns, what they need from you, and what they can commit to at this stage.

Give the shop a useful project brief

Explain that you are considering a purchase and need help deciding whether to proceed. Provide the VIN privately, model year, available equipment details, seller disclosures, and any existing estimates or records. Label each item by its source. A seller's account and a repairer's documented finding should remain distinguishable.

Describe the access available: whether the vehicle can be examined at its current location, whether the owner permits assessment, and what collection constraints have been disclosed. Ask whether the shop accepts this kind of unfinished or collision-damaged project at all. Do not book transport on the assumption that an informal conversation reserves a place.

Ask how capability matches the actual vehicle

Ask who would plan the assessment and what relevant training and vehicle experience they bring. If the shop mentions a business recognition or manufacturer program, ask what it covers and how it relates to the proposed work. Record the answer without treating a business designation as a conclusion about this vehicle.

I-CAR's discussion of shop readiness connects equipment and training needs to vehicle materials, attachment methods, and electronic systems. Use that distinction to ask how the shop will identify the requirements for your vehicle. A universal shopping list of machines would miss the point.

Ask how the repair planner accesses current manufacturer information and tracks revisions. As a recent example of changing documentation, I-CAR's July 2026 Honda newsletter summary identifies an update to the 2024 Prologue body repair information. This does not prescribe a repair for your project; it shows why the document version belongs in the conversation.

Establish responsibility for outside work

A shop may use another provider for part of the project. Ask which work would leave the facility, who selects the provider, and who explains the findings to you. For scanning or calibration, request separate descriptions of the proposed operations and the records you would receive.

I-CAR's shop-readiness article discusses performing selected calibrations internally and sending others out. Its ADAS diagnostics process also addresses customer authorization and sharing information with the parties involved. Ask how the shop will handle those arrangements for your vehicle rather than assuming every service happens under one roof.

Blank shop-interview worksheet

Use the same worksheet for each candidate. This original template assumes the vehicle's condition and repair scope remain partly unknown. It records proposed responsibilities, not completed work or an endorsement of a business.

Interview topicQuestion to askWritten evidence to request
Project acceptanceWill you assess this vehicle before purchase, and under what access conditions?Vehicle details; proposed assessment appointment; exclusions
Assessment leadWho will plan the assessment and explain its findings?Named contact; relevant role and experience
Technical informationHow will you identify current procedures for this vehicle?Applicable document titles and revision or access dates
Capability limitsWhich likely tasks can you assess here, and which need another provider?Proposed division of work; unresolved capability questions
Outside servicesWho arranges the work, movement, authorization and reports?Responsible contact for each service
Further accessWhat needs owner permission or a separate authorization?Assessment boundaries and approval process
Practical acceptanceWhen could you receive the vehicle, and in what condition?Receiving arrangements; storage and collection terms
Findings and next decisionWhat will I receive before deciding whether to buy?Findings summary; remaining unknowns; follow-up options

Keep “not yet determined” as a valid answer. The useful distinction is between an uncertainty the shop can investigate and a question nobody has agreed to own.

Compare commitments before choosing

After each interview, send a short recap to the shop through your own usual communication channel and request corrections before relying on it. Ask whether its assessment offer is separate from any later commitment to repair the vehicle. Record when that offer or proposed appointment needs reconfirmation.

If the shop cannot explain how it will establish the applicable requirements or obtain a needed outside service, seek another assessment option before buying. If access is too limited to answer a purchase-critical question, leave it unresolved rather than interpreting willingness to quote as evidence of condition.

Questions and answers

Does a shop's assessment offer mean it has agreed to repair the car?

No. Ask whether the assessment offer is separate from a later repair commitment, and record when the offer or appointment needs reconfirmation.

What should I establish before sending the vehicle to a shop?

Confirm that the shop accepts the project and get the assessment scope in writing. Confirm receiving arrangements and access conditions; an informal conversation does not reserve a place.

Who should explain findings from work sent to another provider?

Ask the shop to name the contact responsible for each outside service and explain who arranges movement, authorization and reports. For scanning or calibration, request separate operation descriptions and the records you would receive.
