Buying without a dealer licence3 minute read

Buy a salvage car in Saskatchewan without a dealer licence

How the salvage auctions treat public buyers in Saskatchewan, what brokers do, how buying on DNF differs, and when reselling needs a dealer licence from the FCAA.

Saskatchewan buyers have more routes than most. SGI and Manitoba Public Insurance sell their salvage online to anyone who opens a public buyer account, while the big private auctions set their own rules.

These are the province's and the auctions' rules as of October 2026, and either can change them. Check the sources before you act.

Auctions, SGI and brokers

SGI sells many of the vehicles it writes off online through its auction partner, and anyone who isn't a Saskatchewan dealer or recycler can open a public buyer account for a yearly fee; Manitoba Public Insurance offers the same. Private auctions set their own rules on who can bid, so read each one's terms. A vehicle bought out of province still has to meet Saskatchewan's rules, and an out-of-province write-off needs both of SGI's inspections.

Some buyers use a broker, a business that bids on their behalf. Expect its own fee on top of the auction's buyer fees, then taxes, transport and storage if collection runs late, and ask for the total in writing first.

DNF, with no licence

DNF lists vehicles straight from owners who kept them after a write-off, body shops and small rebuilders. Making an offer takes a free account and no dealer licence. You offer above or below the asking price, the seller accepts or declines, and nobody's racing a clock. Each listing shows the status from the registration, the damage, whether it starts, runs and drives, photos and a Score.

After an offer is accepted and any required platform fees on both sides are paid, the two of you get each other's contact details and take it from there. The vehicle price is paid directly to the seller, separately from any DNF platform fees. The status comes from the seller and isn't checked against SGI's records, so ask to see the registration, and ask SGI about the vehicle, before you pay.

The FCAA, and the checks first

For a vehicle of your own, no dealer licence is needed. Buying and selling vehicles as a business needs a dealer licence from the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA), under The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act. Ask the FCAA what your plans would need before you start.

Read the Saskatchewan salvage rules guide and check the vehicle's status with SGI's free Saskatchewan VIN search. Search Saskatchewan's Personal Property Registry, run by Information Services Corporation (ISC), for liens, and plan the inspection with the Saskatchewan rebuilt inspection guide.

Questions and answers

Can the public buy salvage vehicles at auction in Saskatchewan?

Yes, at the insurers' own sales. SGI and Manitoba Public Insurance sell salvage online to anyone who opens a public buyer account, and private auctions set their own rules, so read each one's terms.

Can I buy on DNF without a licence?

Yes. A free account lets you make an offer, and registering the vehicle afterwards is between you and SGI.

When does buying and selling vehicles need a licence in Saskatchewan?

When you do it as a business. Vehicle dealers in Saskatchewan are licensed by the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority, so ask the FCAA before you start buying vehicles to repair and resell.
