Whole donor vehicles versus loose parts: choosing the right sales channel
Choose a channel for a complete donor vehicle or separately identified parts. Compare listing units, custody records, fit questions and local business requirements.
General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.
Choose by the unit you are actually selling. A whole donor listing offers one vehicle with a defined set of included items. Loose-parts selling offers separately identified components, each needing its own description, condition evidence and fulfillment arrangements.
DNF's terms describe a vehicle listing and introduction service. Prepare a vehicle package for that workflow. If your intended offer is a series of individual components, use an appropriate parts channel rather than turning one vehicle advertisement into a changing stock list.
Compare the channel's job
This original comparison is for channel selection. It supplies no revenue forecast and does not recommend dismantling a vehicle.
| Decision | Whole donor vehicle | Individual loose parts |
|---|---|---|
| Unit offered | One identified vehicle with explicit inclusions and exclusions | One identified component or a clearly defined set |
| Main description | Vehicle identity, current status, damage, missing items and collection limits | Exact reference, origin, known condition and application restrictions |
| Buyer question | What comes with this vehicle, and what evidence supports that account? | Is this exact component appropriate for the intended application? |
| Custody record | Authority over the vehicle and records of what is included at handover | Traceable acquisition and authority for each item |
| Fulfillment | One vehicle collection plan plus any included loose-item inventory | Item-level storage, packaging, delivery and dispute handling |
| Change to stock | Removing an included component changes the vehicle package | Selling one item changes that item's availability |
| Unresolved requirement | Whether this vehicle and transaction can use the intended channel | Whether the activity, component and destination meet the channel's and local requirements |
If you are undecided, keep both paths as proposals until you understand their requirements. Do not advertise a component as included with the car while separately treating it as already committed to another buyer.

Vehicles for sale (1)Keep identity separate from component applicability
NHTSA's VIN decoder describes encoded vehicle information reported by manufacturers. It is an identity reference, not a parts purchase authorization. A donor of the same model does not by itself establish a match to the recipient's configuration.
For an intended component use, ask the qualified supplier or provider to identify the exact reference, revision, application limits and evidence still needed. Technical use or repair questions belong under vehicle-specific OEM procedures. Do not infer component function from the donor's reported ability to start.
The published parts-compatibility guide covers that evidence request. Keep its unresolved fit questions out of a sales claim such as “fits everything in this model range.”
Check the business activity before choosing the channel
As of October 24, 2026, California DMV's dismantler-license page identifies dismantling-related vehicle and parts activities and lists exclusions. That is California guidance, not a universal requirement or a determination that your activity falls within an exception.
Ask the relevant authority about your jurisdiction, business activity, vehicle status, premises and proposed buyers. Calling an advertisement “donor” does not answer those questions. Leave the channel decision open if required authority or documentation remains unresolved.
Complete a custody handoff card
This blank card describes records to gather, not authority created by completing a checklist:
- Vehicle or item reference, matched to the supporting acquisition record.
- Owner and person authorizing this particular offer.
- Exact package, included loose items and explicit exclusions.
- Known missing or changed items since the photos or description.
- Current custodian, storage location and agreed access for collection.
- Documents to accompany the transaction, with unresolved authority questions listed.
- Recipient and actual handover date, recorded only when the handover occurs.
For a whole vehicle, confirm the package again before collection. If items change, correct the description and notify affected existing conversations through a permitted channel. Browse the vehicle inventory for the vehicle format; keep separate-component sales in the channel that can accurately describe and administer them.
Questions and answers
Can I use a DNF vehicle listing as a loose-parts catalog?
Use DNF for a vehicle offered as a defined package. Loose components need a channel designed for individual part descriptions, applicability, condition and fulfillment; a donor description does not create that catalog.
Does a donor's model or VIN establish that its parts fit another car?
No. Identity information is a starting point. Ask a qualified supplier or provider for the exact part references, application limits and vehicle-specific evidence relevant to the intended use.
Does calling a vehicle a donor settle business licensing questions?
No. Check the actual activities, jurisdiction and applicable exceptions. California's dismantler guidance illustrates why the business activity matters; it is not a rule for every state or province.
