Selling a car with the engine removed or in pieces
Build a parts-custody and handover manifest for a disassembled project car, separating included items, missing pieces, identity evidence and collection exceptions.
General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.
Sell a disassembled car with an agreed manifest of the vehicle, loose assemblies, boxes and records. Establish where each item is, who holds it and whether it is included. “Everything is there” is not a useful substitute when parts are spread between a garage, a machine shop and storage.
The existing unfinished-project handover guide covers the work history. This blank manifest addresses custody and the difference between what was advertised, agreed and physically handed over. It contains no real vehicle inventory or claim of completeness.
Define the sale boundary before counting boxes
Create separate groups for items included and present, included but held elsewhere, excluded, and missing or not located. Keep “not located” distinct from “not included”: the buyer needs to know whether you are promising delivery or acknowledging a gap.
Record tools, lifting equipment and storage stands separately from the vehicle parts. If an item visible in a photograph stays with you, mark the exclusion in the agreed list. Confirm with any outside custodian what it holds and what is needed for release; do not promise delivery from a shop on an assumption.

Vehicles for sale (1)Make an identity record for each assembly or lot
Use a seller-assigned reference that connects the manifest, box label and photograph. Keep that reference separate from the manufacturer's part number or an existing serial number. Preserve an identifier exactly as recorded; do not remove or alter identifiers to make the paperwork agree.
The NHTSA VIN decoder returns manufacturer-reported information encoded in a vehicle's VIN. That scope does not establish which loose engine is present or whether it fits the car. Keep vehicle identity, physical part identification and compatibility evidence separate.
For an ambiguous component, describe the visible marking and evidence you have. Leave the application unresolved and refer a buyer to the published parts-compatibility guide for the separate identification questions.
Copy this blank custody-and-transfer manifest
Repeat a row for each assembly or clearly described lot. Do not label an unopened mixed box as a complete assembly kit.
| Item reference and description | Identification and evidence | Present location and custodian | Included, excluded or unresolved | Collection record |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fill in assembly, box or lot description | Existing marking; photo; invoice or source record; condition as known | Fill in; identify any outside release dependency | Fill in; state missing associated pieces or unknown contents | Quantity or lot received; date; recipient; exception |
Attach a missing-and-unresolved schedule to the manifest. For each gap, record what the buyer was told, whether the item is promised later, who is responsible and what remains undecided. Do not leave an unagreed future delivery hidden in an “included” column.
Keep a document index beside the physical items: original receipt available, copy available, record held elsewhere, or no record located. Redact unrelated personal details from material shown publicly. Identify which original records will transfer and which will remain with their holder.
Keep provenance separate from condition
A purchase receipt can support where an item came from. It does not establish that the item works, that a machine-shop operation was completed or that all associated pieces are present. Attribute each condition statement to an actual report or observation, with its date.
Documentation can matter to a later administrative process. For a specific US example, New York DMV asks for original replacement-parts receipts at its salvage examination. That requirement concerns the New York examination; this manifest does not replace it or prescribe another jurisdiction's records.
Reconcile collection against the agreed version
Date the agreed manifest and keep changes visible. Before collection, ask the transport provider which loose items it accepts and who is responsible for their handling. Refer packaging, lifting, fluid and hazardous-component questions to the appropriate provider; this inventory is not a packing or disassembly procedure.
At handover, mark each item received, left behind, substituted or disputed. Record any separately arranged collection from another custodian. Give both parties the same final version so “the engine comes later” cannot disappear into an older advert.
Use the description guide to summarize the actual included load and unresolved gaps. Browse current vehicles for context without treating another seller's completeness claim as evidence for yours.
Questions and answers
What should a disassembled-car sale include beyond a general parts list?
Record each item's identifier, location, custodian, inclusion status and supporting evidence. At collection, reconcile what was actually received against that agreed manifest.
Can the vehicle's VIN establish that a loose engine belongs with it?
No. A VIN decoder describes information encoded in the vehicle number. Keep the loose engine's own identifying evidence, provenance and compatibility questions separate.
How should I describe boxes of unidentified fasteners or brackets?
Describe them as an uncounted or unidentified lot where that is the actual position. Do not call the car complete or assign the contents to an assembly without supporting evidence.
