What a salvage title means
Declared a total loss after damage and usually repairable, but it must meet the state’s requirements, often an inspection, before it can be put back on the road.
On Washington titles
- Destroyed
- Washington issues no salvage title: the title is surrendered marked Destroyed. The vehicle can still be rebuilt and inspected by the State Patrol.
- Flood Damage
- Washington doesn't brand flood itself but carries forward another state's flood or saltwater damage brand.
Questions buyers ask
What is a salvage title?
It’s a brand a state puts on a vehicle’s title, usually after an insurance company declares it a total loss. The word and the rules differ by state, so every listing shows the exact word and the state that issued it.
What should I check before I make an offer?
Go through the damage, condition and photos, check the Score’s reasons and message the seller through DNF. Before you pay, ask your state’s DMV what it needs to title and register the vehicle.
What does the Score on each listing mean?
It rates the listing out of 100 from its answers on the brand, damage, condition and paperwork, with the reasons shown. We don’t inspect vehicles, so it’s only a guide.
How do I buy one of these vehicles?
Create a free account and offer above or below the asking price. If the seller accepts, you pay an introduction fee and the seller pays a success fee. Once both fees are paid, you swap contact details and arrange payment and pickup. DNF never handles the money for the vehicle.
