Alberta is known for summer hailstorms. CARFAX Canada's history-report data for the first half of 2026 put Alberta first in the country for weather-related vehicle damage, almost all of it from hail. Every storm season leaves a new crop of dented vehicles behind, and some of them get written off.

For people who repair or part out vehicles, that's a steady supply of cars whose damage is mostly to panels and glass.

What hail does to a car

Most hail damage is to the body: dents across the hood, roof and trunk lid, sometimes the pillars and doors as well. A bad storm can crack the windshield, back glass or sunroof and break headlights, tail lights and mirror glass. It can damage trim, mouldings and roof rails, and water gets in wherever glass broke.

Hail seldom touches the engine, transmission or suspension, so many hail write-offs still start, run and drive. That's why rebuilders like them: the cost is often body work and glass, with the structure left alone. Not always, though, and the photos tell you which.

Insurers write a vehicle off when the repair cost gets close to what it was worth. A roof, hood and trunk lid covered in dents can take a lot of skilled body work or several new panels, plus glass and trim. On an older car, that adds up fast. The same car may be perfectly repairable for someone with the skills, the time and the parts.

How the brand works in Alberta

The brand depends on the damage and how the claim was settled. A write-off for hail dents in the body panels alone doesn't make a vehicle Salvage in Alberta. If the hail did other damage too, such as broken glass or lights, the exemption may not apply, and an insurer's write-off can put Salvage on its record. A Salvage vehicle has to be repaired and pass a salvage vehicle inspection before it can be registered for the road again, and after that it shows Rebuilt for good.

An owner who was paid for hail damage, written off or not, can end up with a vehicle that has no brand at all, only a damage history. Read the status on the paperwork or a Vehicle Information Report yourself, and see the Alberta salvage rules guide for what each one means.

Before you make an offer

Look at every panel in daylight. Hail dents show best at a low angle in overcast light, and the roof is the part buyers most often never see, so ask for photos of it.

  • Check the glass and the sunroof. Cracked glass costs money, and a sunroof that leaked can mean water in the headliner and the wiring.
  • Look inside for stains, a damp smell or water marks. Any of them means water got in.
  • Look for chips where hail broke the paint. Left alone, they can rust.
  • If the seller has the insurer's estimate, ask what it covered.
  • Search Alberta's Personal Property Registry for liens before you pay.

If you plan to rebuild it, cost the job before you offer: parts, paint, glass, the salvage vehicle inspection and your own time. The Alberta rebuilt inspection guide lists the steps, and what the DNF Score means explains how the Score weighs hail.

Questions and answers

Is every hail-damaged car in Alberta branded Salvage?

No. In Alberta, a vehicle written off only for hail dents in its body panels doesn't become Salvage. If the hail also broke glass, lights or a sunroof, the exemption may not apply, and an insurer's write-off can make it Salvage. Check the status on a Vehicle Information Report from a registry agent, and ask the seller how the claim was settled.

Can a hail-damaged Salvage vehicle be driven again?

Only after it's repaired, passes a salvage vehicle inspection and has its status changed to Rebuilt by a registry agent. Until then it can't be registered for the road.

How does the Score treat hail damage?

It gives hail and other cosmetic damage more points than collision damage, since they're usually easier to repair. The brand, the repair estimate and whether the vehicle runs and drives count as well, so look at the photos too.

Can hail damage hide other problems?

It can. Hail cracks glass, sunroofs and lights, and water gets in through the gaps. The vehicle may also have older damage that has nothing to do with the storm, so ask the seller and look at every photo.
