carVertical or CARFAX Canada: compare evidence coverage before paying

Compare provider-disclosed history, photo and lien-search coverage for a Canadian purchase, then identify the records you still need before choosing a report.

By DNF · Editorial method

General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.

Start with the missing evidence, then choose a report whose disclosed coverage addresses it. CARFAX Canada's product descriptions separate vehicle history from a lien-search product and distinguish BC information. carVertical describes several possible history sections, with availability depending on the vehicle and country. Neither description establishes which provider will find more records for your particular car.

This comparison reflects public provider disclosures read on October 24, 2026. It is not a comparison of purchased reports or a test of their accuracy.

Compare coverage by question

The matrix compiles carVertical's section descriptions and CARFAX Canada's report-type descriptions. Read each cell as the provider's stated scope, rather than a promise about records for one vehicle.

Evidence you needcarVertical disclosureCARFAX Canada disclosureQuestion before choosing
Damage and odometer historyDamage entries and recorded odometer readings are possible sections.Accident or damage history is included among the described history-report categories.Which event periods and countries matter for this vehicle?
Canadian brand and registration historyThe overview describes ownership history; its separate US branding section concerns vehicles used or registered in the US.Describes Canadian and US registration and branding details, excluding Northwest Territories from Canadian coverage. What Canadian brand and registration records can this product supply?
Canadian liensThe general financial-status description mentions possible financial restrictions, including leases. It does not establish a Canadian provincial lien-search scope.Distinguishes Vehicle History Report + Lien Check from a history report without lien information.Which jurisdictions and search date will the lien product cover?
BC recordsThe general overview does not establish an ICBC-specific option.Describes BC report variants with available ICBC damage, estimate and insurance information.Does the selected product include the BC information you need?
Earlier imagesHistorical photographs may appear when available. The report-type page does not establish a historical-photo feature. Are images available, and what do their dates mean?

A feature that the cited page does not establish remains a question for the provider. It is not proof that the provider lacks that feature.

Avoid treating an empty section as an answer

carVertical explains that unrecorded accidents, informal repairs and inaccessible databases can leave gaps. CARFAX Canada's accuracy guidance says its report reflects information supplied by participating sources. Those disclosures give no basis for treating an absent entry as proof that damage never happened.

Keep brand/status, damage history, liens and present condition as separate questions. A populated damage section does not answer the lien question. A lien result does not describe repair quality.

Use a coverage request before paying

This is a blank buying aid, not a provider questionnaire already completed for a real car. Write down:

  • Missing evidence: the particular event, jurisdiction, registration period or image set you need.
  • Exact product: provider, product name and any relevant option.
  • Public disclosure: the dated page that appears to address that need.
  • Unanswered scope: the country, province, source or date coverage still requiring clarification.
  • Alternative evidence: original records the seller can share, a registry search or an independent assessment.

If your main gap is a Canadian lien search, do not substitute a generic financial-status heading for the search scope. If it is an earlier damage event, ask which dated records could answer it. Buying another report is useful only if its scope addresses a real gap; duplication alone does not establish completeness.

For interpreting a damage entry already in hand, use how to read a carVertical damage record. When comparing vehicles, carry forward the unanswered questions alongside each listing instead of reducing the research to a preferred provider's name.

For the separate Canadian financial-interest question, use the official lien-search route compilation.

Questions and answers

Does a standard CARFAX Canada history report include a lien search?

The provider distinguishes its Vehicle History Report from its Vehicle History Report + Lien Check. Confirm the exact product and search scope before relying on lien information.

Does carVertical promise historical photos for every Canadian vehicle?

Its feature overview says photos appear when available and that sections depend on available vehicle data. Ask about Canadian coverage for the vehicle you are considering.

Which provider finds every accident?

Neither set of disclosures establishes complete accident coverage. Missing records still require questions for the seller and an independent assessment.
