UK Cat S and Cat N are not Canadian or US vehicle brands
Compare UK write-off categories with BC status, Alberta terminology, and US state brands without treating them as legal equivalents or import decisions.
General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.
UK Cat S and Cat N do not translate into a Canadian provincial status or a US state title brand. Preserve the original wording, issuing jurisdiction, and record date. Then establish what the relevant North American record actually says.
This comparison records the cited authorities' terminology as of October 24, 2026. It establishes no legal equivalence, repair outcome, or permission to import, register, drive, or obtain insurance for a particular vehicle.
What the UK letters describe
GOV.UK's category table distinguishes structural and non-structural damage for S and N. Those descriptions concern the UK insurance write-off framework; they are not a complete condition report.
| UK category | Published distinction | Keep out of a North American description |
|---|---|---|
| A | Whole vehicle must be crushed | A claim that another jurisdiction assigns an identical brand |
| B | Body shell must be crushed; some parts may be recovered | An inference that any recovered component suits another vehicle |
| S | Structural damage; category allows repair within the UK framework | A claim that repairs are complete or that a US rebuilt brand follows |
| N | Non-structural damage; category allows repair within the UK framework | A claim that the damage is minor or that the vehicle has no other unresolved issues |
This table summarizes the categories, not their complete UK return-to-use conditions. An episode title using a category remains a creator's label unless the corresponding vehicle record is available. It cannot establish a Canadian or US result.

| Jurisdiction and primary source | Terminology the source uses | Meaning of the comparison boundary |
|---|---|---|
| British Columbia: ICBC Vehicle Status | normal, rebuilt, salvage, altered, non-repairable | These are BC statuses. ICBC says status alone does not fully describe mechanical condition or damage history. |
| Alberta: salvage vehicle inspection guidance | salvage and rebuilt | Alberta describes a local inspection process and a status change after passing it. These are not alternate names for UK S and N. |
| United States: DOJ/BJA consumer guidance | State-applied brands, with examples including junk, salvage, and flood | NMVTIS does not standardize state definitions or thresholds. Name the issuing state and exact brand. |
BC and Alberta are separate provincial examples, not a single Canadian system. The US row is an explanation of state differences, not a list of every state's brands or procedures. No row determines the treatment of an imported vehicle.
Blank terminology record for a listing comparison
For each vehicle, keep separate entries for:
- Original category or brand: exact wording, jurisdiction, document source, and date.
- Later administrative record: exact wording, issuing province or state, document source, and date; unknown if unavailable.
- Reported damage: who supplied the account and the event it concerns.
- Current findings: author, examination date, assessed scope, and unresolved areas.
- Destination questions: intended province or state, intended use, and the authority or provider whose answer is still needed.
Do not overwrite the original label with a guessed local equivalent. Where records appear inconsistent, retain both and ask the relevant registry to explain their scope and dates. A seller's shorthand should not become a factual conversion in your comparison.
For Alberta's local process, use the existing salvage rules guide and rebuilt inspection guide. For US record types, use the published NMVTIS, NICB, and VIN decoder comparison.
When browsing vehicle listings, compare the actual jurisdiction records alongside the damage account. Familiar words from a rebuild video cannot answer the destination's administrative or technical questions.
For the US record-history question, the title-brand tracing guide keeps earlier and later state records separate.
Questions and answers
Does UK Category S mean a US rebuilt title?
No. Category S describes structural damage within the UK write-off framework. A US state applies its own terminology and standards; this comparison establishes no conversion.
Does a BC normal status establish no previous damage?
No. ICBC says status alone does not fully describe mechanical condition or damage history. Preserve the source date and request the relevant history and condition evidence separately.
Does this crosswalk decide whether a vehicle can be imported or registered?
No. It identifies terminology and source jurisdictions. Import, registration, road-use, and insurance questions remain separate decisions for the relevant authorities and providers.
