Lost title or registration: prepare paperwork before advertising
Find selected official replacement-document sources in Canada and the US, then distinguish a lost document from unresolved ownership before advertising a damaged car.
General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.
Identify exactly which document is missing and which authority issued it before advertising the vehicle as ready to transfer. A lost document in the recorded owner's name needs a different enquiry from a car still recorded to someone else, an estate vehicle or paperwork held by a lender.
The directory below covers selected Canadian and US jurisdictions, checked October 24, 2026. It is not a complete national directory or permission to sell without the documents required for your situation.
Classify the problem before choosing a form
Write down the document name, issuing province or state, recorded owner, vehicle reference and what happened to the original. Keep the underlying identifiers private. Distinguish lost, damaged, stolen, never received and held by another party; do not describe every situation as a lost original.
If the record names a prior owner, a company or someone who has died, tell the authority that fact. Keep advertising on hold while selling authority is unresolved. A replacement request should describe the actual record and applicant; it is not a method for skipping an ownership transfer.

Vehicles for sale (1)Canada: selected registration-document source
| Jurisdiction and official page | What the page addresses | Question to resolve for your vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Quebec: SAAQ replacement registration certificate | Lost, stolen, illegible or damaged registration certificates, with different instructions inside and outside Quebec | Which route applies to your location and account, and what evidence is needed if someone acts for you? |
SAAQ describes reprinting through its online services and alternatives when the certificate is unavailable there. Its service-outlet instructions also distinguish an owner, someone acting under power of attorney, and a business representative. Check the applicable section rather than assuming a printout of any vehicle document is enough.
Outside Quebec, start with the authority that issued the missing registration document. Use the Canadian guides to locate existing jurisdiction context, then obtain the authority's replacement instructions for the document you actually need.
United States: selected title-document sources
| State and official page | What the page addresses | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| California: DMV title transfers and changes | Replacement or transfer using REG 227 for a missing title | The page separately addresses lienholders and a registration marked as nontransferable with no California title issued; do not assume REG 227 resolves every case. |
| New York: DMV replacement title certificate | Online, mail and office replacement options | Online replacement has ownership, address and record requirements, and excludes deceased-owner, power-of-attorney and certain lien-related requests. |
Ask the issuing state which document must be replaced if you hold salvage paperwork rather than an ordinary title. Neither row is a substitute for that answer. Do not book collection around a delivery estimate borrowed from another applicant's experience.
Keep a replacement-document progress record
Use this blank record privately. It tracks what remains unresolved without representing that an application has been accepted.
- Missing item: exact document name, issuer and reason unavailable.
- Applicant basis: recorded owner or representative, with supporting-record reference.
- Correct route: official page, applicable section and date read.
- Questions outstanding: lender involvement, estate documents, name or address changes, or different recorded ownership.
- Application status: not submitted, submitted, authority requests more information, or document received; enter only the actual state.
- Transfer readiness: documents still needed beyond the replacement, person responsible and next follow-up.
Keep receipt and application references out of the advert. Once a document arrives, compare its vehicle and ownership details with the underlying record and resolve discrepancies through the issuer.
Decide what can accurately appear in the advert
A pending application is not a replacement document received. State the actual position if an advert is otherwise permitted, and avoid a collection commitment that depends on an unresolved document path.
Use the damaged-car description guide for condition wording and current inventory for listing context. A clear advert helps a buyer understand the car; it cannot replace ownership or transfer evidence.
Questions and answers
What should I establish before requesting replacement paperwork?
Identify the issuing jurisdiction, the exact missing document and the recorded owner. Explain any lender, estate or ownership mismatch to that authority before choosing a replacement process.
Can every New York replacement title be ordered online?
No. New York DMV excludes several situations, including a deceased owner's title, a request using power of attorney and a duplicate requesting lien removal. Use its instructions for the applicable alternative.
Does this directory cover every province and state?
No. It contains selected sources for Quebec, California and New York. Elsewhere, obtain the relevant issuing authority's instructions rather than borrowing a neighboring jurisdiction's form.
