How to correct an error in a vehicle history record

Find the correction route for the actual report or registry involved. Use a blank request template and change log to preserve evidence without promising removal.

By DNF · Editorial method

General guidance. No specialist review is claimed unless named on this page.

Identify the exact entry, preserve the report and submit a factual request through the route for that product or issuing agency. Ask for investigation of an error you can explain. Do not rewrite the report yourself or request removal of an accurate event merely because the vehicle has since been repaired.

A correction concerns the accuracy of a record. Comparing two reports is an earlier task: first establish whether they actually make incompatible statements about the same fact. The single-report reading guide helps identify the field before preparing a request.

Choose the route for the record involved

The directory below reflects official guidance read on October 24, 2026. The links explain how to begin; they do not establish a correction outcome or processing time.

Record or productPublished routeScope to preserve
carVerticalService rules, section on report inaccuracies direct users to its notification form and explain that additional information may be requested. Its rules describe cooperation with original data sources. A request does not establish that the record will change.
CARFAX CanadaInaccuracy investigation guidance directs owners to Request a Review and asks for disputed dates, record types and reasons.Use the Canadian route for the Canadian product. Follow its current instructions about identifiers and attachments privately.
CARFAX USCorrection guidance directs owners to Data Research Request.A person who does not own the vehicle is asked to have the owner contact CARFAX. Do not represent yourself as the owner.
NMVTIS reportDOJ's discrepancy FAQ directs questions to the report service provider.Start with the provider that supplied the report; identify which disputed field came from NMVTIS rather than a bundled source.
Texas letter about a brand reported by another stateTxDMV's Title Check guidance describes obtaining a statement from the reporting state and submitting it for Texas consideration. This is the stated Texas-letter situation. It does not establish another state's correction process or a right to remove a brand.

For a registry outside that narrow Texas example, ask the issuing agency for its current amendment process and who may apply. A commercial provider's response is not an agency determination.

Assemble evidence that addresses the alleged error

Preserve the report reference, generation date, disputed entry and any original document that conflicts with it. Explain the connection between the document and the field. A document about a different vehicle, period or kind of event does not answer that dispute.

CARFAX Canada's guidance gives record-specific attachment suggestions, including originating documentation for odometer concerns and insurer material for claim concerns. Use the applicable instructions rather than sending a large unrelated file bundle. Share necessary identifiers and personal material only through the intended private support channel.

If you are the prospective buyer, request the owner's cooperation where the route requires it. Record what you cannot obtain. Do not bypass the provider's authority requirements.

Use a blank correction-request template

This is an unfilled writing aid, not a submitted case or a prediction of success. Adapt it to the provider's form and required fields.

I am requesting investigation of the entry described below. My relationship to the vehicle is: fill in accurately. The report or record reference and generation date are: fill in. The disputed entry's date, type and exact wording are: fill in. I believe the specific factual issue is: fill in. The supporting document, issuer and date are: fill in. It addresses this field because: fill in. Please explain the entry's source and date meaning, whether an amendment is supported, and which records any amendment would affect. If more evidence or owner authorization is required, please identify it.

Do not put identifiers into a public version of this template. Keep the completed request with the evidence rather than attaching it to a vehicle advertisement.

Track the response and its reach

Maintain a short change log: original report reference, request date, case reference, evidence supplied, written response date, field changed or retained, and any replacement record reference. Keep unresolved fields explicit.

Ask whether a response explains the entry, amends the provider's presentation or records a change at the original source. Do not assume an amendment propagates to other reports, earlier copies or government records. Check the particular records your buying decision depends on and retain the basis for any changed description.

If a request is declined, ask what evidence was insufficient and which source can address the remaining issue. Neither a request nor an acknowledgment establishes that the earlier history was wrong. Carry unresolved issues into your comparison of vehicles, and use the remote-buying evidence guide for the other documents and current assessment still needed.

Questions and answers

Can a prospective buyer request a CARFAX US correction as the owner?

No. CARFAX US directs owners to its Data Research Request route and asks people who do not own the vehicle to have the owner contact it.

Does correcting a report automatically change an official state record?

Do not assume that. Identify the original source and ask which records the amendment affects. Keep provider responses and any agency determination separately.

Can a valid accident or brand be removed just because repairs are complete?

A correction request should identify a factual error and supporting evidence. Completed repairs do not by themselves establish that an earlier accurate event was incorrect.
